No More Ladders!: Enjoy the Benefits of a Home Without the Maintenance

For Joe and Carrol Peery, retiring to Montereau is something like a third act in their lives. The couple has been married for 40 years, and after raising a family in Houston, they retired in 1998 to be close to their grandchildren in the Texas hill country. Once their grandchildren grew up, the Peerys looked up and asked themselves, “What next?”

“Someone from Montereau called us up and invited us to an event, and I am so glad we did,” said Carrol. “We didn’t know about Montereau at the time. We came to one of the events, liked what we saw and put our names down on the waiting list. We are really grateful we did that, because the responsibility of maintaining a home and a yard would have been overbearing.”

“I couldn’t agree more,” Joe said. “I have to say, I’m pretty active and in good health at 81, so Montereau for me was the opportunity to leave behind a lot of the things that were taking my time, such as yard care and home repairs. Even if I wasn’t necessarily doing them, there was the time of lining up services, supervising the work, and waiting on people to come for various appointments.”

Now the Peerys are free to pursue new activities. They live in a garden home, and Joe enjoys spending time in his garage workshop. “The most important thing is that we have all the benefits of owning a home, but without having to take the time to deal with the tasks of home maintenance. I don’t even change a light bulb. I pick up the phone and they’re here within the hour. No more ladders for me. I’ve had my experience with ladders and it was not pleasant.”

With their free time, the couple enjoys pursuing tasks they want to do. For Joe, that means singing in the neighborhood chorus. For Carrol, that means tap-dancing classes. “I can’t say enough how pleasant it is to live here, and to meet people from all walks of life, from all occupations, from all parts of the country,” Joe said. “My goodness, the friendships we’ve established in four years are lasting.”

Carrol said she feels particularly fortunate to have been at Montereau during the coronavirus. “I cannot even imagine if we were living in our home during this time, how we would have been able to cope,” she said. “They have taken care of everyone here. They are so forward-thinking in making sure we are protected and supported in every way. I am just so grateful that we are here and not out trying to make decisions.”

Joe agreed, adding, “We have tried to let our friends and associates know about Montereau. It’s the best thing in the world if you’re looking.”
