As the seasons change and nature blooms anew, the city of Tulsa blossoms into a vibrant playground for seniors. Here at Montereau, we believe that having a memorable season starts with having a plan for how you’re going to make the most of it. To help, we’ve compiled a list of delightful activities around town to add to your agenda this spring.
Discover Fresh Finds at the Tulsa Farmers’ Market
With the shifting seasons comes the opportunity to savor the sights, sounds and flavors of spring. What better way to do so than to immerse yourself in the bustling atmosphere of the Tulsa Farmers’ Market? As Oklahoma’s premier farmers market, this local institution has become a treasured weekly tradition for residents and visitors alike. Seniors can enjoy a morning stroll through the stalls, visiting with vendors and exploring offerings of fresh produce, artisanal crafts and savory baked goods. Beyond the many delectable treats it provides, a visit to the farmers market also offers an opportunity for seniors to socialize and stay connected with the greater community.
The Tulsa Farmers’ Market is open Saturdays from 7 to 11 a.m. Mark your calendars for April 6 — the opening day of the market’s 27th season!
Explore the Beauty of the Tulsa Botanic Garden
Sitting in the Osage Hills just 8 miles northwest of downtown Tulsa, the Tulsa Botanic Garden offers a relaxing retreat where seniors can connect with the beauty of nature. Spanning over 170 acres, this botanical haven weaves a captivating tapestry of curated landscapes and enchanting trails. As they stroll along the winding pathways, seniors can enjoy an afternoon of relaxation, reflection and appreciation of the natural world. From vibrant seasonal blooms to tranquil woodland retreats, each section of the Tulsa Botanic Garden showcases the beauty and diversity of plant species. Themed areas include the serene Japanese Garden and the colorful Victoria Garden.
Be sure to keep an eye out for the garden’s exciting annual events, including its Sip & Stroll spring celebration and Tulsa Botanic BLOOMS — one of the largest spring flower festivals in the region.
Take a Scenic Stroll Along the River Parks Trails
After the chill of winter has passed, there’s nothing quite like getting outside and enjoying the fresh spring air. Tulsa’s River Parks Trails offer the perfect place for seniors to participate in some light physical activity while enjoying the beauty of the outdoors. Set along the Arkansas River, this trail system stretches across miles of picturesque landscapes, serving as a hub of urban recreation for walkers, joggers and nature enthusiasts alike.
Whether you’re working up a sweat with a cardio routine, spotting wildlife along the riverbanks or simply pausing to admire the city skyline against the backdrop of the water, each step along these trails delivers a fresh new perspective of our beautiful Tulsa. You may even consider packing a snack and stopping by one of the many picnic areas to enjoy your afternoon lunch al fresco.
Enjoy a Horse Race at Fair Meadows
Enjoy the thrill of the track at Fair Meadows race course. Free and fun for all ages, this local destination is steeped in tradition and history and has been a focal point of leisure for decades. Each night, Fair Meadows comes alive with the thundering hooves of horses as they compete for glory on the track. While the racing season doesn’t begin until June, the course plays host to a variety of engaging events, concerts and festivals throughout the year — not to mention the delicious dining options at the Fair Meadows Sports Grill.
Catch a Jazz Show at the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame
Looking to experience the vibrant culture of the Tulsa music scene? Nestled in the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame, the Jazz Depot offers an opportunity for seniors to engage in the rich heritage and cultural significance of jazz music in our state. Though this venue is currently undergoing renovations, they still present an eclectic lineup of jazz performances, ranging from intimate trios to full-scale big-band extravaganzas.
Free to the public, the Jazz Depot’s weekly events allow seniors to enjoy the stylings of local artists, renowned musicians and emerging talents. Every Tuesday night from 6 to 8 p.m., Baxter’s Interurban Grill hosts a jazz jam where patrons can stop by to listen or even join in and showcase their musical talents, while Wednesdays offer up a unique musical experience from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., with live performances featuring the talents of different guest artists each week.
Visit the Philbrook Museum of Art
While the spring may bring its share of beauty outdoors, there’s plenty to behold indoors at the Philbrook Museum of Art. Set in the historic home of Waite and Genevieve Phillips, the gallery boasts stunning architecture and a world-class art collection. The permanent collection features over 16,000 objects, with a focus on American, Native American and European art. Additionally, the museum curates a variety of engaging exhibitions throughout the year. Beyond its galleries, the property also boasts 25 acres of formal gardens where guests can enjoy beautiful landscapes, tranquil water features and a curated selection of outdoor sculptures. This space has helped Philbrook earn a reputation as “the most beautiful place in Oklahoma.”
This April 5 to 7, the museum welcomes Art in Bloom, a museum-wide experience that allows visitors to enjoy the location through the eyes of local floral designers and participate in interactive activities. The spring also brings Philbrook’s much-anticipated wine experiences, where individuals can participate in wine seminars and tastings. For inspired seniors looking to engage in their own forms of creative expression, the museum also hosts open studio hours each Saturday. Stop by and create your very own work of art.
