At Montereau, we love to gather around tables and share food that is flavorful and healthy. As we observe National Nutrition Month in March, we want to celebrate the many ways you can “Eat Right, Bite by Bite.” This year’s theme focuses on how each bite, each meal, is an opportunity to savor delicious food at Montereau and do something good for your body and mind.
Focusing on good nutrition is essential for health and well-being. Consider these sobering statistics from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services:
- Most Americans – about 90% – eat more sodium than is recommended.
- Consumption of total fat increased from approximately 57 pounds in 1980 to 78 pounds in 2009 in the United States.
- Recent reports project that by 2030, half of all adults (115 million adults) in the United States will be obese.
- Those who are obese have medical costs that are $1,429 more than those of normal weight on average (roughly 42% higher).
Healthy Eating Tips
The good news is we all can make small choices about nutrition each day that make a big difference to our health. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics states, “Good nutrition doesn’t have to be restrictive or overwhelming. Small goals and changes can have a cumulative healthful effect, and every little bit (or bite!) of nutrition is a step in the right direction.” Here are a few tips from the Academy:
- Eat a variety of nutritious foods each day.
- Include healthful foods from all food groups.
- Hydrate healthfully.
- Practice portion control.
- Take time to enjoy your food.
Some of the practical ways you can eat healthier each day are to reduce your sodium (pass on the salt!), fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables, and choose whole grains and lean meats. For more support with your health goals, take advantage of Montereau’s Vitality Wellness Program.
