‘The Burden of Responsibility’: Why Choose a Life Plan Community

The decision to move into a retirement community can be challenging, in part because there are so many options and types of communities to join, ranging from active adult neighborhoods to assisted living. Montereau is a Life Plan Community, which means we offer the best of all worlds: the limitless lifestyle opportunity of independent living and the peace of mind that comes from knowing you will be cared for as your needs change.

Most residents join our independent living community because they are attracted to the idea of joining a thriving network of like-minded older adults who are looking to make the most of retirement. They love our top-of-the-line dining on campus, the many activities and amenities at your fingertips, and the vibrant social life every day of the week.

But our residents also enjoy the security that comes from having a full continuum of care available should they ever need it. We have an onsite health center so independent living residents can keep up with their medical checkups. If and when they ever need that extra bit of care, such as help with dressing and bathing or medication management, assisted living is right on site, allowing residents to age in place. Our memory care and long-term care neighborhoods are available as well, offering progressive specialized programming to help engage residents so they can live life to the fullest of their abilities.

“Our adult children may not appreciate it now, but they will one day appreciate that they won’t have the burden of responsibility to care for us. We’ve already made all the medical decisions, so our children and grandchildren will appreciate what we’ve done for them,” said resident Ava Callahan, a retired educator who came to Montereau with her husband, Gene, when the couple decided maintaining an acreage would not be sustainable as they aged.

“We were living in the Texas hill country, but we both had connections to Tulsa and knew we wanted to retire here,” she said. “We actually came here to tour another retirement community and stopped by Montereau on a whim, and we immediately felt at home. Everything here is top of the line, and we just feel blessed to live here, especially in this time of Covid.”

Ava and Gene live in a cottage and maintain an active, independent life, complete with barbecues and social gatherings (modified recently, of course, for the coronavirus). They appreciate all the amenities—including the fitness center, swimming pool, movie theater, and performance theater—as well as the way the staff gets to know residents by name. In Gene’s words, they love “the people, the place, and the peace of mind that comes from living here.”
