We all know that rest and a balanced diet are key to staying healthy as an older adult. What about flexing those creative muscles? As adults, we tend to neglect our creative side to fulfill other obligations. In retirement, it’s your time to reignite that creative spark. In addition to being enjoyable, ongoing research has revealed that involvement in activities such as singing, theatre and arts may help improve the health, well-being and independence of older adults.
Now that you have more options and a flexible schedule, your only question should be, where do I start? At Montereau, our wellness programs will enrich every facet of your life and when you’re in the mood to venture off campus, there are endless ways to live a creatively fulfilling life during your golden years.
Here are a few you can consider:
- Explore your creative interests: Nothing gets those creative juices flowing like an engaging, hands-on activity. Whether on or off campus, get involved in more activities that include dancing, writing, playing an instrument or doing art.
- Experience something new: The novelty of going to a new place or doing something for the first time helps to take you out of your comfort zone and create new neural pathways in your brain which boost creativity and cognitive abilities. This can include anything from a new hobby or sport to traveling, trying new foods or learning a language.
- Visit the Philbrook Museum of Art: Go immerse yourself in one of the many exhibitions displayed at the museum. You can also take part in their extensive list of events that will help fuel your creativity. This month’s activities include fish feeding, nature walks, singalong Saturdays, flower arrangements and more. Have a look at the complete calendar on the website and decide which you’d like to attend.
- Enjoy a performance: Tulsa boasts the nationally recognized Tulsa Ballet and Tulsa Opera. There’s also the award-winning BOK Center or historic Cain’s Ballroom. Why not consider attending an event or show at one of these venues? In fact, attending live performances has been linked to a boost in imagination, creativity and mindfulness.
- Start small: Creative outlets can sometimes be intimidating. Dip your toes into a new art form like paint-by-numbers, scrapbooking or an air-dry clay sculpture kit. These can also be wonderful activities to involve younger family members in.
